VNU- Central Institute for Natural Resources and Environmental Studies (VNU-CRES) held the summative end-of-year conference for 2019 and implementation plans for 2020

On December 31st, 2019, VNU-CRES, Vietnam National University (VNU) held the Conference to summarize the work of 2019 and deploy the plan for 2020.

Attending the Conference were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Bao Son, VNU Vice President and representatives of the Directors from VNU Functional Departments including: Department of Science and Technology, Department of Planning – Finance, Department of Cooperation & Development, Department of academic affairs and Organization – Personnel Department.

At the Conference, Director General of VNU-CRES, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luu The Anh reported the results of the mission in 2019, outstanding achievements as well as shortcomings, difficulties that need to be overcome and key tasks of VNU-CRES in 2020. In 2019, VNU-CRES continued to consolidate the apparatus and reorganize personnel, in which the Institute’s Board of Directors actively transferred positions between the functional departments and specialized departments to promote capacity, experience and qualification of each officer.

Even though the fact that there are still many difficulties and challenges, VNU-CRES, with the spirit of solidarity to rise up and promote the tradition, has achieved some fundamental results on scientific and technological activities (S&T), cooperation and development, training, policy consultation and international publication. In particular, the Institute has implemented 10 science and technology projects at different levels including 03 National Science and Technology projects; 02 provincial projects; 01 VNU-level project; 04 Institute-level projects; 02 S&T service contracts and 4 international cooperation projects in fields that are VNU-CRES’s strengths such as: Natural resources management, biodiversity conservation, assessment of mangrove ecosystem services , developing geographical indications, afforestation and restoring poor forests with indigenous trees of economic and scientific value, sustainable development, and coping with climate change. The Institute’s scientists have published 19 scientific papers in prestigious international journals (including 17 scientific articles in international journals on the list of ISI / SCOPUS); 06 scientific articles in national magazines and international conferences; published 03 monographs and reference books; organized 08 international scientific conferences on fields related to biodiversity conservation and biosphere reserves, environment and climate change, and plastic waste from ocean.

In 2019, VNU-CRES has stepped up domestic and international cooperation. The Institute has signed some more comprehensive Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with Tay Bac University, Vietnam National Forestry University, Institute of Genome Research (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology), VNU-Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology (VNU), Wildlife conservation society, Asian Turtle Program, University of Copenhagen (Denmark) and Lingnan University (Hong Kong), Asian Climate Change Education Center (Korea), that increase the total number of valid MoU of VNU-CRES with partners to 13 copies.

The 2018-2019 academic year is the 22nd consecutive year that VNU-CRES is the Trust Fund of Nagao Natural Environment Foundation (Japan) in Vietnam. VNU-CRES has granted 74 scholarships to the excellent Master’s students with majors in natural resources management and protection, biodiversity conservation, forestry, agriculture, from universities across the country. In the 2019-2020 academic year, Nagao Scholarship continues to grant 40 scholarships to the students.

Regarding the results of implementing the mission in 2019, VNU-CRES has completed 15 out of 22 registered targets with VNU, in areas including training, scientific research and international integration. , staff organization, finance, and facilities.

Sharing with the results achieved in 2019 and the 2020 plan of the Institute, VNU Vice President Pham Bao Son acknowledged and appreciated the Institute’s results achieved, shared with the difficulties and challenges of the Institute over the years. In the new position, the Vice President affirmed that VNU is always interested in investing and creating favorable conditions for the Institute to develop. The Vice President directed the Institute to focus on developing the Institute’s development strategy in the new phase, which clearly identified development priorities and plans such as: Strengthening the organizational structure towards reducing the number of Functional and increasing the number of Research Offices; building and developing strong Research Groups; investing and building key laboratories; attract qualified staff to work at the Institute; develop a plan and roadmap for relocating to VNU in Hoa Lac, …

To summarize the Conference, Director General Luu The Anh proposed the 2020 plan targets of the Institute, launched the emulation movement to set up achievements to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Institute’s establishment (1985-2020) and called on the collective of officials and employees continuing to unite, promote internal resources, take initiative in innovation, creativity and strive to successfully implement the tasks in 2020 to build the Institute on a growing development.
