Medals “For the Development Cause of VNU” awarded to Nagao Natural Environment Foundation President and Former President

In recognition of the valuable contributions to the development of VNU in general and the partnership between VNU Central Institute for Natural Resources and Environmental Studies (VNU-CRES) and Nagao Natural Environmental Foundation, Japan, in particular, on December 2, 2019, VNU Vice President Pham Bao Son presented medals “For the Development Cause of VNU” to President Ryutaro Ohtsuka and former President Yasuhiko Yaki of Nagao Natural Environment Foundation (NEF).

NEF is a Japanese non-governmental organization, established in 1989 by Mr. Eijiro Nagao, President of Marusan Limited Company.

Since 1995, VNU Centre for Natural Resources and Environment Studies (now VNU Central Institute for Natural Resources and Environmental Studies) has been the sole representative of the NEF Fund in Vietnam to implement the Nagao Scholarship Program with a total of 510 scholarships for graduate students nationwide in the field of natural resources conservation and biodiversity.

In the 2019-2020 academic year, NEF is granting 40 scholarships to Vietnamese graduate students to carry out research in nature conservation, forestry, agriculture and environmental sciences for Earth sustainable development.

In addition to the Nagao Scholarship, NEF is funding VNU Central Institute for Natural Resources and Environmental Studies to implement the NEF Project “Nature Conservation in Northern Vietnam Mountainous Regions” for a period of 3 years (October 2018 – September 2021) with the funding of USD 500,000.

Speaking at the event, VNU Vice President Pham Bao Son expressed his honour to award the Medals to Prof. Dr. Yasuhiko Yaki and Prof. Dr. Ryutaro Ohtsuka from Nagao Natural Environmental Foundation. The awards are the recognition of the awardees’ valuable contributions to VNU, to Vietnam as well as to the promoting of Japan – Vietnam relations

VNU Central Institute for Natural Resources and Environmental Studies Director General Luu The Anh expressed his deep gratitude to the Nagao Natural Environment Foundation for trusting VNU in general and VNU-CRES in particular over the past 20 years. VNU-CRES wishes to continue to receive the Foundation’s valuable cooperation and support for postgraduate training in the field of natural resources conservation and biodiversity in Vietnam through scholarships and other research programs.

VNU-CRES Director General Luu The Anh committed to always appreciate and use NEF’s funding effectively for postgraduate training in order to contribute to nature protection, biodiversity conservation and the sustainable development of Vietnam.

Prof. Dr. Ryutaro Ohtsuka was born in 1945 in Japan. He graduated from the University of Tokyo majoring in Anthropology in 1967. Three years later, he got a Master’s degree in the same major and received a Ph.D. in 1980. He has served as NEF President since June 2013. Prior to that, he was the president of the National Institute of Environmental Research and Japan Wildlife Research Centre.

Former President Yasuhiko Yaki operated NEF from 2001 to 2013. He holds both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Fisheries and a Ph.D. in Agriculture at the University of Tokyo. After resigning from the position of NEF President, he continued to be an advisor to the Foundation until 2017.
